Business Activity Statement (BAS) Service Providers

NJM & Co Financial Solutions Pty Ltd are an authorised BAS service provider In Accordance With (IAW) the Income Tax Assessment ACT 1936, Part VIIA, Division 7, subsection 251L(6). Many business owners would not be aware that bookkeepers generally cannot perform BAS services for a fee. IAW with Australian Taxation Office (ATO); "It is an offence to knowingly or recklessly charge a fee for the provision of tax services if you are not a registered tax agent or a person eligible for an exemption. Offenders can be prosecuted and fined up to $22,000 for a breach of this law." NJM & Co Financial Solutions Pty Ltd are provisioned to charge a fee for BAS services IAW above Federal laws under the jurisdiction of a registered Melbourne tax agent.

Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Scheme

The ATO are currently developing a BAS Service Provider accreditation scheme (due for release early 2008), where bookkeepers will no longer require exemption through a third party registered tax agent to lodge BAS directly to the ATO. NJM & Co, whilst already accredited, will become an official provider through the ATO, where both NJM & Co and clients will have direct access to BAS lodgements with the ATO.

If you're not submitting your BAS directly to the ATO as a business owner; through a registered tax agent or authorised representative such as NJM & Co, you must by law. If you have a bookkeeper charging a fee for BAS services and cannot provide you, as a business owner, the authorisation from a registered tax agent / ATO, you would be advised to cease such services immediately and seek qualified services that comply legally with the Australian Taxation Office. The ATO are taking action against those who illegally perform such tax services IAW the Income Tax Assessment ACT 1936.
